What not to wear on a boat

Alana-flower3

After weeks of cold, rainy weather, we finally were granted a weekend of sunshine. I was excited to finally put on a skirt without tights, and I thought this would be the perfect spring outfit. Yes, it was my "French lady" outfit, according to Thibault.

The outfit was great, but definitely not practical for paddle boating. Note to self: always wear shorts under skirt when paddle boating, otherwise, all the other boat people will get a nice view of the lake, as well as up your skirt.

Photoshoot

(Title stolen from Friends. If you get it, Thibault and I are both very proud.)

You know those annoying couples who hold hands all the time? The boy can't stop kissing the girl's forehead and the girl continues to snuggle in the boys arms when she's cold? You know, the couple who is completely oblivious to everyone else? Well, I must admit, I was one half of that couple yesterday.

You see, Thibault is leaving for Switzerland on Tuesday. I don't know when, if ever, I'll be seeing him again. So, we've tried to fit in as much fun this weekend as possible.

We started the day off taking some photos in the park and making our way over to the lake to rent a paddle boat for an hour. I've never been on a paddle boat, so it was an amazing experience...especially because Thibault took over the pedaling half way through.

We then had a delicious pizza/calzone lunch at an Italian bistro (which I thought was French...I'm not very cultured, apparently). And then we took a long nap and tried to get tickets to Les Miserables...and ended up seeing a different show. In Thibault's words- "We went to a gay show." Yes, yes, there were some homosexual characters, and we did see a man's butt, so I guess it was kind of gay, but definitely good.

I started crying during intermission, which only made Thibault cry. We then burst out laughing at the absurdity of the situation- we were crying during a comedy.

photoshoot-2

After organizing and editing photos, Thibault and I realized that our eyes are the same color. Pretty awesome, no?

Anyway, I'm off to enjoy our last 36 hours together. There will definitely be a lot of tears, but right now we're going to watch Arrested Development.

Springtime black

Black-dress
Black dress- stolen from Sophie, lace skirt- loehmann's, tights and shoes- gifts from my mom, flower hair pins- the pebble collection

When I dress for springtime, I usually whip out the floral print and bright colors, but springtime in London is a lot different than anything I'm used to. Sure, we've had our share of sunny days, and I'm aware that "April showers bring May flowers," but still, it's been a rainy mess around here lately. As a result, I put together a sort of confused spring outfit, full of layered blacks, bright sneakers and a hint of springtime in the form of some flower hair clips.

Back

Can I tell you a little secret? I'm wearing the dress backwards! Because it's so low cut, I typically have to wear a tank top underneath it. I wasn't really feeling the one clean (green) tank I had in my drawer,  so I got a little daring and turned the dress around! I think there's something incredibly sexy about a woman showing a little bit of her back.

Face

Thibault even joked that if I lied down in the grass, people would confuse my hair pins for real flowers! I'm not exactly sure of that, but I do think they're pretty fantastic! (The pink one was a gift from my good friend, Arielle, back in Boston.)

Final-black-dress

My one problem with this look? The skirt just didn't want to stay up (as you can see in the photos), so there was a bit of a gap between the dress' empire waist and the waist of the skirt. Boo. Otherwise, nice look, right?

Some Favorites

It's a very slow day in the press office, as in, we're down to two interns and one employee. I'm sitting here craving a delicious sandwich that I can't eat because it's Passover. Ahhh only 4 more days! Though I still have MORE Switzerland photos to post, they're all saved on my laptop.

In any case, I've been saving a bunch of favorite posts in my bloglovin account and I should probably share them with you!

We all know I love online sample sales, that's why I'm so excited for the Outnet's 1st bday event- if you RSVP by April 11th, you can buy 1 designer item for just $1!!

How funny is this PETA ad?

I absolutely adore jow Jen styled this outfit- the color combination is amazing!

Though I'm not the biggest fan of Khol's, I think their "Simply Vera" Spring 2010 collection is quite pretty!

I think Leah's guide for doing your own photoshoot is absolutely amazing and so helpful!

'Tis all for now. I'm actually having an ok day doing nothing at work and finally bonding with my boss. Have a great Easter weekend, everyone!

Confessions of a fashion intern: grit and glamor

You'd be crazy to say that any job was absolutely perfect. Clearly, all jobs, especially internships, have their perks as well as their not so fun aspects.

Here's a bit of the grit and glamor of my internship:

Glamor: I make daily trips to Vogue House. (Also, whenever I think of the phrase "Vogue House," I immediately hear Ludacris singing "Roll out.")

Vogue-house

Grit: I typically go to the loading area in the back of the building. It's not all that glitzy.

Stop-spitting

Glamor: I once Randomly stumbled upon a Harvey Nichols event in the park where I eat lunch. Oh yeah, Samantha Ronson was DJing

Sam-ronson

Grit: Today I Carried a full-size, naked manikin across a major street and got loads of stares. Thank goodness for the help of fellow intern, Vicky, who admitted she felt slightly uncomfortable holding the manikin between its legs.

Person

Glamor: I once spotted a dog with a pink dipped tail on my lunch break. (He was hanging with his owner at the Harvey Nichols event.)

Pink-tail

Grit: The elevator broke and we had to carry an entire showroom's worth of clothing down 4 flights of stairs. Thankfully, almost the entire press team, not just the interns, took part in this gruesome task and the lift was eventually fixed.

Glamor: I get to help out at a major charity event tomorrow night- I'm in charge of handing out goody bags.

It's always good to end on a positive note :)

...it's what's keeping me smiling

Clouds, I love clouds!

Today was another long day at work- we're prepping for our press day on Friday, so we had to completely empty all of the showrooms in order to bring in new stock. It involved a lot of lifting, cutting tape, making boxes and putting clothes in plastic suit covers. Though I'm not sore yet, I know by tomorrow my arms will be aching.

But, although I'm a bit grumbley from a hard day at work, there's one thing that's making me smile. It's just three days away and I can't stop thinking about it. You see, on Friday, I'm doing something very exciting: I'm packing up some clothes, my camera, and hopefully my amazing French vocabulary skills (ha) and heading to Switzerland to meet up with Thibault!

Yes, you heard me. I'm going to Switzerland to spend the weekend with Thibault and his family. I couldn't be more excited. He's been back home in Switzerland since Friday in order to take some tests for his upcoming (mandatory) army service. He's promised me loads of fondue, amazing wine and of course, delicious chocolate. He's going to show me the lake where he swims during the summer and introduce me to some of his friends.

It's going to be an amazing weekend and a much needed break.

Sigh. I am a lucky girl.

The ball

Thankfully, my boss let me off of work an hour early, which gave me just enough time to throw on my dress and paint my toes and do my makeup while Maria did my hair. The look was perfect- it was exactly what I was going for.

A million thank yous to Maria for her hair expertise. Somehow, she managed to interpret my vague description and made my hair look amazing....for free!

She also snapped these photos quickly before I left:

Ball2

Thibault was the perfect gentleman- he showed up at my door dressed in a tux and holding flowers. Because Maria did not let me leave the house with a coat, Thibault let me wear his and I'm sure I looked ridiculous. The Tube ride was slightly uncomfortable, because people kept looking at us...you don't often see people dressed in black tie taking public transportation.

Ball4

I stole the above photo from one of Thibault's friends. I think it's pretty perfect.

The night was full of champagne, awards, music and yummy food. I really enjoyed hanging out with a bunch of Thibault's friends who I'd met at a previous lifesaving event. One of the girls yelled at the waiter because he stole one of our wine bottles and gave it to another table. It was pretty funny, but also ridiculously rude, especially when a boy at the other table triumphantly thumped the empty wine bottle back on our table.

The funniest moment of the evening was when Thibault pulled me aside, lifted up the bottom corner of his tux jacket and exclaimed:

"I think I put my belt on backwards."

He was referring to his cumber-bun (ok fine, CUMMERBUND, thanks mom), a word he only learned after I laughed at him and told him that yes, he had put his "belt" on backwards. In all fairness, it was the first time he'd worn a tux, so it was all very new to him. He only realized his mistake after seeing a different friend whose "belt" was worn correctly.

What a fun night :)

He asked me to a ball

The-ball

In just a few days, I'll be attending a "ball" with Thibault to celebrate the end of his season on the competitive lifesaving team. (Yes, it is a real sport.)

I picked up the above dress at French Connection on a rainy day during my Scotland trip. I had previously tried the dress on with my little sister at the Heathrow airport, so I already knew it fit. The fact that I didn't need to try it on, and that the price was heavily reduced was enough to convince me to buy it. Little did I know I'd actually need to wear it while in London.

The shoes were also a UK score- I picked them up right before my internship interview on sale at Monsoon. I have yet to wear them and am excited to pair them with the dress.

Though I know I'll be wearing my favorite red lipstick (Kat Von D's "Underage Red") and hopefully finding the time to paint my toenails in a similar shade, I'm not sure what accessories to wear, or how to do my hair.

Did I mention that the ball is this Thursday?!? Plus, I'm at work until 6 and the ball starts at 7, leaving me  very little time to get ready. Maybe my boss will let me off an hour early...

Any accessory/hair suggestions would be much appreciated! I ideally would like to wear my hair up, but everyone here seems to think I should keep it down. I want the overall look to be classic and elegant, simple yet glamorous. Help!

Pink spandex and sparkles

Thibault-and-alana

Armed with a cute outfit, a sweet boy and Mr. Pointy (aka my camera), I entered the roller disco ready for anything. As I've described to my kitchen mates, going to the roller disco was sort of like attending an 8 year old birthday party...with alcohol.

Roller-disco

The music was energetic and fun (Donna,  you would have loved it), proving that my listening to the 13 going on 30 soundtrack pre-disco was a good idea. They played a mix of 70s and 80s favorites perfect for singing along while skating.

Seeing everyone's creative costumes was probably the best part- I loved that boys weren't afraid to wear short-shorts over tights (gasp!) and that many girls wore colorful tutus. It was like an American Apparel explosion. I started to recognize my cheap pink tights from Primark on many other skaters, both male and female.

Smile

Though many people got pretty drunk, I remained conservative and had one beer. Seriously, I was already scared enough about being on wheels. I will admit, it got a little sloppy when I spilled half of my beer on myself, not due to drunkenness, but due to wrist guard induced bottle gripping impairment. Hard plastic = not helpful.

Wrist-guards
Mom, the above photo was taken for you. These wrist guards were worn the entire night.

Thibs
Yes, that is my scarf he stole borrowed

Would I do it again? Probably not, but it's definitely something you should do once. It's safe to say I was enticed to leave at just 10:30 by my favorite chocolate ice cream . This girl cannot refuse Sommerfield's chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup and chocolate shavings. Seriously, all that goodness is prepackaged and soooo wonderful!

Headband and top- H&M, pink hair piece (not shown), necklace and tights- Primark, socks and boots- Target, skirt- Pink Zone.

So, this is what I ended up wearing to the roller disco last night. I made a quick trip to Primark during my lunch break and picked up 4 accessories (3 for me, 1 for Thibs) for just 5 quid. By combining 3 new pieces with things I already had, I think I came up with a pretty awesome outfit!

Jonathan was kind enough to snap these photos before I left. Though I initially felt overdressed, Thibault reassured me that yes, I did look crazy, but in a good way.

Consider this a preview of the night- I have more photos and stories to come!
