Stylish Snippet: petite shopping tips

As you all know, I like to think of myself as somewhat of a fashionista-in-training. I get a lot of my inspiration from watching TV reading fashion blogs and seeing stylish people on the street. It also helps to get tips from people who know what they're talking about when it comes to clothes, especially when they understand what it means to be tiny.

Enter Henrietta Pertuz, a designer whose clothing is tailored for petite and stylish ladies like myself. Here are a few tips on shopping petite from Henrietta herself, as well as some photos of her pieces. Enjoy!

Henrietta Pertuz's five tips for petite fashionistas:

1) If you buy something off the rack in a regular size and you are petite (5'4" or shorter), it probably does not fit you correctly.  I learned this the hard way, and it's the reason why I started my clothing line.  I spent most of my twenties in clothes with sleeves that partly covered my hands, armholes that were too low, dresses that hit mid-calf and pants that were too long -- or hemmed with masking tape, or hemmed too short. Either find time for the tailor or buy clothes made for petite women.

2) Stay away from pants that are too long.  I still can't erase the image of myself falling on my face in front of my college crush because my jeans were too long!  A 29"-30" inseam works for most petite women.  If you are a shorter petite (under 5'0") and must hem, still start with a petite size.  This way, at least you know the rise and hip measurements will fit you and you won't have to recreate the whole garment.

3) Baggy clothes don't do us any favors.  I wore lots of baggy sweaters and muu muu-esque clothes after gaining the freshman 15, and still shudder in horror when I see the photos!  I looked like I had gained the freshman 30.  The reverse is true, too.  If you are tiny (say, under 100 lbs), wearing really baggy clothes can make you look much younger.  Petite women have lots of different body shapes.  If you are more voluptuous, as many petite women are, you should embrace your curves.

4) Dressing in one color and wearing vertical lines (pleats, ruffles, or stripes) can definitely lengthen your frame.  But finding the right fit is just as important.  Those stripes won't work for you unless the garment fits well.

5) Finding good fit and quality is much more important than following a trend.  If you like the way something fits you, and it is well-made, then you should buy it in 2-3 colors and keep it forever.  Buy wardrobe "building blocks" that fit and flatter your body shape.  Shift dresses, skinny pants that go from day to night, the perfect button down blouse to show off your lovely collarbone...these are examples of investment pieces that will never go out of style.  You can pass down to your kids, nieces, etc. and they'll love you for it!

FCUK contest

Usually when I get emails from French Connection, I quickly glance at the photos of clothing I can't afford and hope that my favorite pieces will soon go on sale. Today on the other hand, I actually clicked through because my FCUK email offered me the chance to win a spring wardrobe...cool!

Basically, you just create a profile on Sale.com and create a polyvore-esque collage with all French Connection pieces. Then, you simply have your friends "like" it and whoever gets the most likes wins. So go ahead and check out my collage!

I'd love it if you (facebook users) would give it a thumbs up! No pressure though, and hey, if you make your own collage let me know so I can "like" it too!

So I know you like The Good Girl Gone Blog, but now you can officially "like" it! How cool is that? Thanks Typepad/Facebook/Mark Zuckerberg!

I really like using Bloglovin to follow all of your blogs. I've made it my homepage, so when I open Firefox, I'm presented with a magazine-like assortment of blog excerpts that I can choose to mark as read, read right away or save for later!

I've developed a sort of organizational system where most of the blogs I read fall into the "style" category. I typically "like" giveaway posts so that they get neatly saved into a special "liked posts" section that I can refer to later. I also save some of my favorite posts so that I can share them with you on my blog. I totally recommend using Bloglovin...it's definitely making my blog reading experience a lot less chaotic!

So honestly guys, what are you liking today? Anything cool going on online? Anyone buy a fresh bouquet of their favorite flowers, try a new recipe or meet a handsome stranger?

Just a little fitted blazer

Iz and I were due for a fun dinner and I had a two-for-one voucher for one of my favorite British restaurant chains, Giraffe- what great luck! After a day spent for the most part in my room writing a paper and obsessively checking volcano updates, I decided to lose the yellow sweatpants and purple t-shirt in exchange for something a little more polished.

...it's almost that time of year again!

long-view

It's almost that time of year again, the daffodils are in full bloom and beginning to dry up. Soon, you'll be able to buy a fragrant bouquet of pink peonies at Trader Joe's to brighten up a dull apartment. Sweaters are being thrown in drawers, socks are going into hiding and all toes MUST be polished. Yup, it's almost that time of year again...

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll remember last year's sundress week project, my first real attempt at outfit posts. It was so much fun that I decided to bring it back this year! I have to wait a few weeks, simply because London has not caught up with the US temperature wise  and most of my spring clothes are back in Baltimore.

Basically, the premise of sundress week is that I'll be wearing a different sundress for, you guessed it, an entire week. I'd love for you all to participate- last year even my dog joined in on the fun. I'll keep you posted on the details, but basically, I'll be asking for photo submissions from you! Last year, I had submissions from Darkroom Daisies, My Red Trench, My Schnitzel Sandwich and That Short Chick!

Who's in?

A few dresses I found and saved. I'm pretty sure they're ALL out of my price range, but they're great for inspiration!

(Title stolen from Friends. If you get it, Thibault and I are both very proud.)

You know those annoying couples who hold hands all the time? The boy can't stop kissing the girl's forehead and the girl continues to snuggle in the boys arms when she's cold? You know, the couple who is completely oblivious to everyone else? Well, I must admit, I was one half of that couple yesterday.

You see, Thibault is leaving for Switzerland on Tuesday. I don't know when, if ever, I'll be seeing him again. So, we've tried to fit in as much fun this weekend as possible.

We started the day off taking some photos in the park and making our way over to the lake to rent a paddle boat for an hour. I've never been on a paddle boat, so it was an amazing experience...especially because Thibault took over the pedaling half way through.

We then had a delicious pizza/calzone lunch at an Italian bistro (which I thought was French...I'm not very cultured, apparently). And then we took a long nap and tried to get tickets to Les Miserables...and ended up seeing a different show. In Thibault's words- "We went to a gay show." Yes, yes, there were some homosexual characters, and we did see a man's butt, so I guess it was kind of gay, but definitely good.

I started crying during intermission, which only made Thibault cry. We then burst out laughing at the absurdity of the situation- we were crying during a comedy.

photoshoot-2

After organizing and editing photos, Thibault and I realized that our eyes are the same color. Pretty awesome, no?

Anyway, I'm off to enjoy our last 36 hours together. There will definitely be a lot of tears, but right now we're going to watch Arrested Development.

Some Favorites

It's a very slow day in the press office, as in, we're down to two interns and one employee. I'm sitting here craving a delicious sandwich that I can't eat because it's Passover. Ahhh only 4 more days! Though I still have MORE Switzerland photos to post, they're all saved on my laptop.

In any case, I've been saving a bunch of favorite posts in my bloglovin account and I should probably share them with you!

We all know I love online sample sales, that's why I'm so excited for the Outnet's 1st bday event- if you RSVP by April 11th, you can buy 1 designer item for just $1!!

How funny is this PETA ad?

I absolutely adore jow Jen styled this outfit- the color combination is amazing!

Though I'm not the biggest fan of Khol's, I think their "Simply Vera" Spring 2010 collection is quite pretty!

I think Leah's guide for doing your own photoshoot is absolutely amazing and so helpful!

'Tis all for now. I'm actually having an ok day doing nothing at work and finally bonding with my boss. Have a great Easter weekend, everyone!

Forgive me? A massive Sunday Confessional

How could you say no to this face?

Ok, I'm the first to say that I hate when bloggers apologize when they take blogging breaks, yet for some reason, I'm doing it right now. It's just that finals are approaching, I have a paper to write and my room is an absolute mess.

I'm freaking out about what to wear in London. I'm extremely tickled that Jaime decided to help me via her Style you Sunday post...but I still haven't found the perfect black shift dress. (Although, I did buy this one on sale at Banana Republic- a place where I NEVER shop. And um, it was only $25!) I still don't know what shoes to pack- I definitely cannot transport my entire boot collection. I don't know if I should invest in a new coat- one that is cute but actually fits and will keep me warm. I love this one from JCrew, but it's just so expensive even with the 30% off discount and free shipping.

I spent my weekend getting hit on by uber-Christian boys on the T, indulging in pop rock garnished drinks with friends and making my roommates sandwiches. I can't stop burning my tongue on hot tea and don't understand how I had an allergic reaction to a turkey sandwich last night...it must have been the condiments. I can't stop scratching- it's either fleas or allergy related.

My online scrabble obsession is turning into full on addiction. I haven't made my bed in about 25 years, which is hard to do, considering I'm not yet 22. I need to stop buying lattes. I miss cuddling with my non-existent boyfriend. My dark green nail polish is chipping and looks terrible.

I want to celebrate my 22nd birthday in London with the queen. Yes, the queen of England. I want her to come to a tea party. Ha. Wouldn't that be the best?

I'm about to listen to Taylor Swift's "You Belong with Me" because it reminds me of someone special. It's the third time I've played it since last night.

I told myself I would start working on my paper at 9:00. It's now 9:38. Ugh.

Wish List: LuLu's

Since the holidays are coming up, I thought I'd bring you all a bunch of cool wish lists of things I like from all over the Web. Today's wish list comes from LuLu's, an awesome store with cute clothes at fairly reasonable prices. Sure, some things are a bit of a splurge, but I'd say buy one signature pieces to pair with something you already own!

Make sure you follow them on Twitter- LuLu's is always having great contests.

So without further ado, today's wish list:

After writing a highly emotional piece about my love life, I decided to put on my favorite boots and some bright red lip stick. I still maintain that dressing in an outfit you love makes you feel beautiful, even if you're sad and feel, well, ugly.

Keeping with the theme of fashion, I decided to put together a roundup of the most stylish links from around the Web. Hope it brightens your day :)

  • Feeling a DIY mood coming on? Why not make these beautiful rufflly headbands?
  • Check out these "airmail" inspired pieces from Kate Spade.
  • I'm so inspired by color- that's why I loved these tulip fields. Amazing, aren't they?
  • Looks like the ladies at Grazia are doing something I've been doing for years: buying children's clothing! Check out Stella McCartney's new line for Gap Kids.
  • I'm loving tights right now. So much so that I might even make these super sparkly ones!
  • Advanced Style: proof that you can be fabulous even with wrinkles...and a hip replacement.
  • I think the new Amazon Kindle commercial is absolutely gorgeous. I love the stop motion film technique- it reminds me of Her Morning Elegance.
  • I submitted a photo to "Fashion Friday" on The Daily Balance and guess what? I won! (Ok, so I was a "randomly generated integer"- but still!) You all should enter next month :)
  • I'm loving Friend in Fashion's most recent post. The photos are gorgeous and I love what she did with a vintage pink dress. Very inspiring!
  • Have some extra t-shirts lying around? Why not make two awesome scarves?
  • I love when bloggers don't take themselves too seriously. These outtakes from my friend Emily are priceless.
