Confessions of a fashion intern: week 1 lessons

Feb 28, 2010

Indian-shoes
Shoes at Brick Lane

Guys, I survived week one of my internship and let me tell you, I've learned quite a bit. My internship is definitely different than anything I've ever done before, but overall, I think it's a good experience. I mean, seriously, I get to look at clothes all day!

Here's what I learned this week:

  1. Waistcoat = vest...vest = sweater vest or tank top
  2. It's normal to call your coworkers "love" and "sweetheart" (I somehow don't think that would have worked very well at my old internship.)
  3. When answering the phone, always put the person on hold before transferring them.
  4. When calling a magazine, you're usually calling an operator who will direct you to your desired party. As a result, you can't just ask for "the fashion cupboard" but should ask for "the Vogue India fashion cupboard," for example.
  5. Clothing starts to get really heavy, especially when you're carrying intricately beaded evening gowns.
  6. Interns can be your best friends- they help you out, show you wear to get lunch and are very understanding when you make rookie mistakes.
  7. Though it feels amazing when a friend compliments your outfit, it feels 10x better when someone working at a fashion label tells you she likes your top.
  8. A full day of work at a major fashion label is exhausting.
  9. The well dressed men that work in the store below the press office, though initially intimidating, are actually really nice. Don't let the suits fool you.
  10. Wear comfortable shoes. Trust me.

Stylish in Spain

Feb 26, 2010

When I first spotted this frilly white blouse in H&M last summer, I immediately thought of two Mexican dresses I used to play in as a child. The dresses were part of our "dress up clothes" and were a thin white material with  a spattering of embroidered flowers in a rainbow of colors. I miss those dresses, and as a result, bought a similar looking top as a substitute. The fabric is light and flowy, perfect for a sunny day in Spain!

I made Izzy snap a few photos of me standing on a concrete structure on the patio behind our hostel in Malaga. The view was gorgeous, and I still can't get over those gorgeous wispy clouds.

tres?

Post "serious" photo shoot, El joined me to take some silly photos. We almost fell over a bunch of times, but ended up having a random dance party. I think the sunshine might have gone to our heads!

Fields of purple

Feb 25, 2010

My trip to Spain was full of sunshine...except for one rainy day in Granada. I could write for ages about the beautiful beach views, the sunshine and the gorgeous flowers, but I'm exhausted from my second day at the internship. Instead of writing, I'll just show you a few snapshots of some beautiful fields of purple flowers. I miss the sunshine and the warm weather in Spain- today was rainy and gross. More Spain photos tomorrow!

Bird or plant?

Ok, I know I only mentioned the purple flowers, but how cool is this guy? Doesn't he kind of look like a tropical bird?

Knickers?

Feb 24, 2010

Today, I started my internship at Armani, and boy, am I exhausted. This internship is quite different than any internship I've ever had before. Let me explain: I spent a majority of my day organizing various closet spaces, separating a box of lingerie and swimwear, following around another intern and requesting sample returns from various magazines and photographers.

Something you should know about me- I hate calling people I don't know. I actually get nervous and shaky just thinking about it, so the prospect of calling magazines like Vogue scared the bajeezes out of me. Plus, I kept worrying I'd forget to ask for "the fashion cupboard" or that I'd say something stupid or un-British. It was very hard for me to keep a straight face when asking a photographer to return a pair of lacy knickers. Honestly, knickers is just a really funny word.

(I sort of want to use it in a sentence combined with the word "knackered." For example, "I'm way too knackered to wash my knickers" or something like that.)

Also notable, I couldn't help but think my boss looked like a British Lilu and that another girl in the office greatly resembled Miss Neira. Maybe I just miss Boston, who knows.

I think the highlight of the day was grabbing lunch with a few of the other interns. We get a 3.50 stipend, so it was fun to see how much food we could get for a small amount of money- I managed to score an ice tea, a bag of crisps and a tomato and cheese Ciabatta melt. Delicious!

Homecoming

Malaga

I'm home from Malaga, Spain. I made it back into my bed at 4am today, just in time to get a little over 4 hours of sleep before my 9am architecture class. All I have to say is thank goodness for caffeine.

I have tons of pictures and stories to share with you, but as of right now I'm sort of exhausted. Spain was great, but it feels good to be back in my familiar, rainy London. Plus, I really missed having a warm bed, familiar food and my tweezers.

More on that later.

Stylish Snippet: Free People dressing room video

Feb 19, 2010

I know what you're thinking...a dressing room video? That sounds dirty. Well, it's not. In fact, it's actually quite awesome. How fun is this video? Now I kind of want to make my own. Who's in? I'm pretty sure I like every outfit except the maxi dress/t-shirt combo. What do you think?

Go Ahead, Put a Label on Me.

Feb 18, 2010

I'm going to be quite honest with you, I don't know much about Kate @ Undeniable Style, today's guest blogger. In fact, I only found out about her blog last week when she left a comment on the other Kate's post. Anyway, I'm very pleased with her submission. Enjoy!

Can you describe your style in 3 words or less? Urban Chic? Picnic Camper Cutie? Too Casual for Words? (okay, that's 4 words). Think about all the things you love about fashion. What do you feel most comfortable in? What are you drawn to? Ready? Go.

See?! Not so easy. I've definitely always been a stylish person (just ask my mom!) but I've never been able to put a label on my personal style....it just seems too final (kind of the same way I feel about tattoos), and I feel like my style is constantly evolving. But, here are some things I've always loved:

Anyhoo, I recently took an online class about developing personal style, and it's really, really, REALLY helped me. One of the projects was to keep a style file with images of things that inspire us: things we like/currently obsess over/lust after etc. I highly encourage you to try it! It was fun, and cathartic. And after 4 weeks of projects, I think I can finally define my style. And this is IT.

And no, it's not 3 words or less, but hey, I'm trying.

A Little About Me:
Hi Guys! My name is Kate and I have been blogging Undeniable Style since 2006. I love Chanel Allure, Sarah Jessica Parker, the Olsen twins, BASEBALL, sleeping in, and bananas with peanut butter. Fabulously uncoordinated. Good natured. Sarcastic. Love, love, love serendipitous moments. Constantly paranoid about having something stuck in my teeth. Not always articulate. California love/California pride. Appreciative of someone who can make me laugh. I hate it when people stare at me, and I am horrible on the phone.

Thanks for letting me guest blog, Alana!

Stylish Snippet: Southern Chic

Thank goodness for fantastic readers like Amy, who sent over this amazing blog post- how fantastic is that boots photo? Kind of makes me want to go to Texas right now. When I think of Texas, I immediately think Mexican food. The Mexican fare in England sort of (sorry mom) sucks. I recently had to explain the concept of "tex-mex" to a non-American. Ha.

Hi there, I'm Amy. I live, work and play in Dallas, Texas. I have been reading Alana's blog for quite some time and I love her fashion posts. While I do not typically post on fashion, I thought I would give it a try for once!

I lived in New York my first year out of college and heard all of the preconceived notions outsiders have of Texas. People have grandiose visions of Texans riding horses, growing up with cowboy hats permanently attached to our heads and being somehow associated with the show Friday Night Lights There is some truth to the rumors: though I have only ridden a horse once in my life, my aunt and uncle do live on a ranch and raise cattle in Central Texas, and I grew up in the suburbs, but going to hometown football games was indeed the thing to do on a Friday night.

I live in Dallas now, the unofficial national capital of platinum blondes in the U.S., but also home to a lot of great shopping. I know, you are so surprised that Prada, Gucci and Barney's would ever venture South of the Mason-Dixon Line, aren't you? Dallas women may be better known for hair volume that would rival Shelby Eatenton's in Steel Magnolias, but they also know how to dress.

Cowboy boots in particular can be worn just about anywhere in Texas. Men can wear them to work, to a football tailgate, or on a date, and women likewise. Cowboy boots may have gained brief national popularity as a trend a few years ago, but they are a lifelong staple in the wardrobe of a Texan. They are understated, comfortable and they go with just about anything. I have seen women wear them anywhere from a Saturday brunch to church to two-stepping (it's dancing, Google it), and it's not unusual to see them worn under wedding and debutante gowns. You can get them custom-made, and I even have a few friends with vintage pairs their mothers passed down to them. They are the ultimate in Texas chic.

One of my lovely roommates, KS, who is in interior design school and has a closet full of Neiman Marcus, is modeling a few examples of what I am talking about. The photos will hopefully debunk the myths that cowboy boots can only be worn on Halloween and that we don't have winter in Texas. (Yes, that snow is real! Last I heard, we had nearly a foot on the ground this weekend... it was magical.)

Have a great week everyone! Thanks Alana!

Blog Friend Crush Award: Julie

Feb 16, 2010

2010-3-16

I know it's been a while since my last BFC post, so I'm so happy to introduce you to Julie of Orchid Grey.

Let me tell you, this lady's got style! I first saw Julie at a fashion blogger meet-up in Boston and could not stop staring at her hair.

Julie's got an amazing personal style and is a thrift store expert. I found the following interview very inspiring, especially Julie's tips for vintage/thrift store shopping. I hope to be able to hang out with Julie in real life when I get back to Boston, because she rocks!

Thanks so much Julie :)

Birthday Pup

DSC02440

I know all of you Maryland/DC people have gotten a lot of snow. Yet while you (and Sadie) have been stuck at home, we Londoners (ha, I'm a Londoner now) have enjoyed some quite rare weather: sunshine.

Although I see tons of adorable dogs every day  in Hyde Park and around Kensington, Sadie is just 100 x cuter. I miss her.

...and now an email from my mother:

Girls,

In case you didn't know, today is Sadie's birthday.  We were told she was born in February and so I chose the 14th for the date, since it was in the middle of the month and an easy date to remember.

I splurged, totally indulged, and bought her a new dog bed (which she may not get for a while, since she tore holes in her old one fairly recently).  This one is made from a blue on blue chintz fabric and resembles an armchair or sofa with a back and armrests, but without the legs (the better to curl up in, my dears).  When she proves herself mature enough, she'll get it!

Anyway, just wanted to keep you in the loop regarding your baby sister.

Love, love, love, your mother
