Oh the hardship of being a girl: cocktail dresses and underwear edition

Feb 27, 2009

I'm just reiterating a point that has pretty much been argued since the beginning of time: being a girl is hard! I could write a dissertation on the subject, but today, I'm just going to cover one small facet: cocktail attire.

As you know, I'm back in Baltimore this weekend for my cousin's bat mitzvah (hooray, mazel tovs all around). I made my flight reservations weeks in advance and assumed I had everything covered. Then, about three days ago it hit me-what the hell am I going to wear?

I frantically called my mom and left a message asking her to call me back ASAP. When she finally returned my call, she told me I needed to find "cocktail attire." Ok, that's fine. In my mind, cocktail attire = little black dress, and LBDs are pretty ubiquitous, especially in big cities like Boston.

Well, after four hours of shopping, I returned to my dorm room empty handed and grumpy. Apparently, I'm about one size too small for most stores. Maybe if I had scoured the boutiques and dropped $250 on a last minute dress, I could have found something in my size, but honestly, that's so not me.

Thankfully, Donna took me to my happy place (aka Loehmann's) and there were about four dresses that were not only cute, but actually fit! We decided on a white halter dress with black lace trim. It's cute, comfortable and probably only needs one safety pin to keep the back from slouching.

Pretty ON pink

Feb 26, 2009

I know I've been M.I.A. for the past couple of days, and if I had a valid excuse other than just being busy, I'd give it to you...but I don't. I'm flying home tonight and spending the weekend in Baltimore for my cousin's bat mitzvah. I'm also getting my license renewed, so that means hello new photo, goodbye picture from when I was 16, had messy hair and braces.

In other news, it's that time of the week again: Pink Thursday. I've been wanting to share a photo with you for a few days now, but I controlled myself and waited because it's the perfect PT photo.

Now, I myself don't typically like animals dressed in clothing, or even small dogs in general, but this one was so cute! Here she is sitting on her "throne" at Eva B, an adorable consignment shop in Brookline. You should definitely check this place out- they have tons of designer pieces at highly discounted prices. It's a great place to spend a relaxing Saturday morning, especially after getting crepes at "Paris," a cute restaurant down the street.

9-year-olds are trouble

Feb 23, 2009

(Alternative title: Don't assume I'm insane until you've read the whole post)

As I unsnapped the front pocket of my coach wristlet in search of my T-pass, I noticed a folded piece of notebook paper. Typically, this pocket only holds my monthly T-pass, a just-in-case Charlie Card, my BU ID and my driver's license, so I was confused when my fingers touched the folded paper.

Had I written a note and shoved it in the pocket only to be forgotten? No. I knew I hadn't.

When the T finally arrived, I scooted my way into an open seat and pulled out the mysterious note. I unfolded the sheet of paper and read:

Dear A,

I love you will you marry me? I want to be with you forever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and ever and...guess what EVER.

Love you <3

Alana!

(The exclamation point contained a heart instead of a plain old dot. It also had an illustration of what looks like a diamond ring.)

If you, like Riki and Megan, think I drunkenly scrawled out this note and forgot about it, you are wrong. I blame these two. 9-year-olds are trouble!

Oh the people you meet in bathrooms

After a week of planning, I finally ended up going out with Lynn and Eve last night. I really do love me some 21+ fun, but it's particularly difficult because 95% of my friends are underage. So last night really was a treat, especially because it didn't take place in a cramped, unfinished basement (aka every BU frat house).

Instead of going back to Wonderbar, which apparently is "my spot" because I've been so lucky there, we decided to try Joshua Tree. Lynn's not a big fan of dancing, and even though I would have enjoyed spending the night on the dance floor, I agreed to go to a more traditional bar.

If you haven't noticed, I have a really short attention span and hate reading/writing long paragraphs. Because of this, and also because I'm still kind of tired, I thought I'd share last night's experiences in a pros and cons list.

Mmmmm, Mmmm good

Feb 19, 2009

So a little while ago, I promised you a post centered around the letter "M." Why M you ask? Well, because it's the letter LittleSack over at Navigating the Quarterlife gave me! I do really love her blog, and when I saw she was playing the letter game, I wanted to participate too, because hey, I like her and I like letters. A lot. As in, I'm kind of a scrabble nerd, but let's not get into that now.

Anyway, the rules of the game are simple: List your 10 favorite things that begin with your assigned letter.

So here we go:

1) Macaroni and cheese- so delicious...especially my mom's "Cowboy Mac N Cheese" recipe. I attempted to make it once when I lived in Israel. I think I got confused about the amount of jalapenos, because damn that stuff was hot! And hey, Mom begins with M too!

2) Magazines- my current favorite is Glamour. One of my guilty pleasures is reading a magazine in the airport. I find a quiet corner in the terminal, grab a quick (and overpriced) snack, and get my fill of superficiality. Pure bliss.

3) Mango Green Tea- so yummy :)

4) My Fair Lady- I know I've already spoken about my love for all things Audrey Hepburn. She's fabulous. Plus, I've always enjoyed singing Eliza's songs in front of the piano as well as in the shower. (Great, now I have the lyrics to "Show Me" stuck in my head.)

5) Moisturizer- I'm currently OBSESSED with J&J's "soft" line. It's supposed to relieve stress, and I actually think it does. I love putting it on at night post-shower and then waking up to delicious smelling sheets.

6) Megan- yes, I know she kills plants and tries to make me like Coldplay, but I still like her.

7) Macs- since I don't have any children of my own (which is a good thing), I like to consider my macbook my baby. Plus, you know how I feel about Mac Geniuses...

8) Marie Digby, Missy Higgins, Maroon 5, Michael Buble, Marc Broussard...- can you tell I just went into my iTunes to find artists whose names begin with M? Clearly my iTunes collection contains other M artists, but these are some of the best. I particularly like MD's cover of You Give Me Something by James Morrison. He's really good too, and technically, his last name starts with M, so he can be part of this list too.

9) Miel et Cannelle- I don't even remember how I found this blog, but I'm so glad I did. I love the beautiful photos. Also, I must confess that I have no idea what the title means, but I imagine it's something fitting. My Spanish/Hebrew skills don't help in the French department.  Andrea is so adorable and I love when she leaves me comments. Go read her blog...now!

10) (Honey) Mustard- if there was a condiment contest, this one would win. It goes with everything, including my current favorite  dining hall sandwich: whole wheat bread, hummus, honey mustard, provelone, lettuce, tomatoe and cranberry sauce. It's like the vegetarian's slightly strange Thanksgiving sandwich! Oh, and just an FYI I hate all other kinds of mustard, so don't go spreading some yellow mustard on my hot pretzel.

So, in keeping with the rules of the game: if anyone wants a letter, just ask.

So this is what I've been up to...

Feb 18, 2009

I've spent a lot of time on my computer today, yet still haven't managed to squeeze out a blog post. I hate to say it, but my life can't be interesting all the time. So, instead of telling you about the tour I gave today or about the yummy bagel I ate, I thought I'd share with you some of the wonderful non-G3B things I've been distracting myself with on the computer.

1) My design homework- try not to judge it too harshly, this is my first real project:

Picture 2

If you look closely, you'll see the lyrics to one of my favorite songs

2) Madberries, a really amazing contest site recommended by A Girl Must Shop

3) The 15 dollar store- everything (including things from one of my favorite designers) is $15. I liked this dress:

Ok, that's enough. Megan's trying to get me to listen to/like Coldplay. I can't focus.

Things can only get better

Feb 17, 2009

On Sunday, my dad texted me and asked if I'd checked my mail. I said no, and he told me I should do it ASAP. I answered that the mail room wouldn't be open until Tuesday because of the long weekend.

I received this response: dead flowers.

When I went to collect my mail this morning, I knew what to expect. My flowers had been sitting there, unattended, for almost four days. Only a miracle would have kept them alive.

Well, there was no miracle. I received a large "pro flowers" box branded with the motto "the freshest flowers just for you." It was like the box was taunting me, telling me I should have checked the mail on Saturday, should have assumed that someone was thinking of me on Valentine's Day. But how was I to know? Maybe these flowers had been fresh at one point, but when I opened the box, they were crushed and pale.

What used to be beautiful red tulips and bright purple irises was now a crushed, moldy bouquet of...death. I rarely get flowers, so when I do, I'm always extremely excited. But then this happened.

And Dad, in answer to the question in the card, yes, I will be your valentine. I'm extremely flattered that you thought of me. Sorry the mail room SUCKS and didn't call like they usually do.

Maybe I should become a fashion designer

Feb 16, 2009

Remember back in the day when I promised you Aretha Franklin-esque hat photos? Well here's one, so enjoy it:

N890445200_6009564_1452

This photo is from Valentine's day. I'm responsible for the Sarah (the red head)'s hat, as well as Megan's hat (on the far right). I'm pretty sure hat making was the highlight of my night since the frat party SUCKED. I'm getting so sick of dark, unfinished basements. I think I'm becoming a snob in my old age- meaning now that I'm 21 and can go to bars, I'm too good for frat parties. Go figure...

Is that a mop?

Feb 15, 2009

Everyone is my corporate communication class has to follow a fortune 500 company. I chose eBay. In a search for information about the company, I somehow stumbled upon this photo:

Bilde

It's one of the Detroit Free Press'
2008: The year in pictures

Check out the rest of the gallery. Things to look forward to: Sarah Palin's wink face, Coco Crisp getting punched, and a fish pedicure. Also, there are a bunch of serious photos, but they just don't appeal to me.

Have I mentioned that I'm a giant?

Hopefully I'll get a chance to write a post later today describing last night's festivities. I could of course write it now, but it's 9AM and I'm grumpy and uncreative. Plus, I think the upcoming post would be even more spectacular if it included photos...which are on Megan's camera and I don't want to wake her up (again).

So instead, here's a photo from my birthday weekend that I neglected to share with you. I think it illustrates one of my defining traits: my sheer size. If you look at the photo, you'll see me on the right...and my little sister on the left. Did I mention that she's 10? She's got about 2 inches on me already. Yeah... I'm that small. Well, you know- good things come in small packages and all that jazz.

And yes, I'm now at the stage in my adult life where I get "hand me ups" from my little sisters.
