My first liquor store purchase!

Jan 30, 2009

Today after work, I crossed the street and entered the liquor store...bum bum bummmmmm. I felt really out of place and was worried they were going to kick me out because I definitely don't look 21. Also, I had no idea what I was going to buy. It was very awkward.

When I went up to the counter, I handed the guy my ID before he even asked. He wanted to see my credit card, and quizzed me on my birthday. I answered him and admitted that I had just turned 21.

He wished me a happy birthday, and that was it. I did it! I called my dad on the way to the T to share my triumph.

Lessons and a date update

Jan 29, 2009

Things I learned last night:

1) BU does not have an adequate sewer system. What started out as a snow storm turned into a rain storm...which left HUGE puddles. Actually, they were more like lakes.

2) Just because you're wearing rain boots, doesn't mean your feet won't get wet. You'd think rain boots would be waterproof, I mean, they're rubber. Apparently, that doesn't mean anything. And omg was that puddle water cold.

3) Some people just aren't tall enough to use peep holes, meaning I couldn't spy on the person having a really loud conversation outside of my room. Megan, who is clearly a giant at 5'2", could see though. Do the people who make doors have something against short people? That's kind of rude.

And in other news...even though my date was canceled due to inclement weather, it's been rescheduled for Sunday. I was a little upset because I was really looking forward to going out last night. But he said he's really looking forward to seeing me :)

The most awkward phone conversation EVER

Jan 28, 2009

If you can remember that far back, I had kind of an amazing Friday night. I went out with a bunch of girl friends and a guy asked me for my number. He said he'd call in two days and guess what...he did! Not that I was waiting by the phone or anything...

Actually, to be truthful, I was waiting by the phone until my guy friend (who shall remain nameless) came over to hang out. Then, I stepped out of my room to talk with him on the couch in the common room. And that's when I heard it- my phone! I jumped off the couch, sprinted into my room and grabbed my phone. It was an unfamiliar number!

So yup, at around 8:30 he called. I was so excited I ran back outside to the common room, climbed back onto the couch and squeezed my friend's hand the entire time. The conversation went pretty smoothly until my guy friend let out a loud chuckle. He immediately covered his mouth in embarrassment, but the damage was already done.

"Am I interrupting something?" The guy on the phone asked.

"No, that's just my friend. He came over to discuss a date he just had..."

Of course then, my guy friend decides to yell out "John!" for some odd reason. I think he was trying to make it seem like a bunch of people were over and that I wasn't having an intimate one-on-one.

That only made me more flustered and awkward. It was horrible. Although the guy said he'd call on Tuesday to confirm a Wednesday date, I had my doubts.

Fast forward to Tuesday- it's 10PM and he hasn't called. I feel like a complete idiot for messing up a date before it even happened. So, I do what any normal girl would do- ask her friends for advice.

The consensus: just call.

So I did, and now we're going out tonight. Yes, he did bring up Sunday's awkward phone call, but hopefully we can just forget about it and enjoy our date. That is, if our date even happens. It's currently snowing. A lot.

Wish me luck- I'm super nervous!

Good Girl Gone Bar

Jan 25, 2009

On Friday night I went out to a bar with my friend Lynn, her roommate and a few other girls. I stressed out for a while about what to wear, and finally decided on a strapless purple top, jeans, and my cute black boots with the bows.

When we got to the bar, the bouncer checked my ID, wished me a happy birthday and let us in. It was that easy!

I know I seem to say this a lot, but Friday night was one of the most fun nights I can remember. Lynn kept insisting on buying me drinks for my birthday (she played the role of sugar daddy that night) and even convinced a guy to buy a round of drinks for our group!

I particularly enjoyed the fact that the bar was not entirely populated by college students. In fact, we all totally got hit on by a 24 year old, who happens to be Jewish, smart and kind of funny. He asked me to dance and of course I obliged, even though he'd been wearing a stupid scarf inside the bar. I told him that was not cool and he took it off. Poor kid, he didn't know he'd be subjected to my strict fashion rules.

Oh yeah, and then he asked for my number. I'm pretty reluctant about giving it out because I have a fear that I'll get my hopes up and the guy won't call. I voiced my concern and he said he'd call on Sunday, because he has to wait two days. Apparently, those are the rules.

Well, today is Sunday, so we'll see. I don't even know if I'm interested in this guy, but it would be nice to go on a date. And who knows, he could be really amazing.

And speaking of amazing, I totally found someone who's willing to speak Hebrew with me. He's one of Lynn's friends, and I discovered on the walk home from the bar that he's fluent in Hebrew too! Conversing in a language that no one around us understood- what a great way to end the night!

Note to the boys: cheesecake is the way to my heart.

Jan 23, 2009

I once "dated" a guy who lived in Chicago. I say "dated"  because it was one of those high school long distance relationships. You know, you meet the guy on a school trip or youth group outing, spend a few days together and boom, you can't get him out of your head.

That's what happened with Sam, the tall, goofy best friend of my friend Ari, who I'd met on a summer program. Sam and I spent most of our youth group convention together. Being a clueless Jewish boy, he kissed me under the tinsel because he confused it with mistletoe.

"Look, tinsel," he'd said and held a tiny piece of silver fringe over our heads.

"Aww you're so adorable and Jewish, I have to let you kiss," I responded.

He was amazing, and when we said goodbye a week later, I was devastated. I thought we'd never talk again and that he'd promptly forget about me.

Well, he didn't. As soon as I got to the airport, he texted me. And then the texting evolved into phone calls. Soon, we were talking every night online and on the phone. I came into school one day and promptly told my friends that I was "in infatuation" that clearly being the step before being "in like," which comes before being "in love!"

When my birthday rolled around the corner, Sam surprised me by sending not 1 but 3 birthday packages! I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Not only did I have a boy who cared about me, but he bought me presents! The packages included a DVD he knew I wanted, a poster of my favorite TV show, a Chicago deep dish pizza and a cheesecake!

Yes, a boy sent me a cheesecake. I knew he was a keeper. (Well, for the next month at least.) While this cheesecake was pretty good, it was definitely not up to par with the confections you find at the Cheesecake Factory.

Oh, did I forget to mention that before we left, he bought me a slice of Cheesecake factory cheesecake that I proceeded to devour on the plane ride home with my best friend? That boy definitely knows the way to this girl's heart!

Now, my current favorite Cheesecake Factory flavor is chocolate mousse cheesecake, which I typically split with my two of my best girl friends, Iz and Pinkey.

Today at work, Kboss informed me that I can enjoy Cheesecake Factory cheesecake without making the trek through the snow. I know, it sounds too good to be true! Apparently, you can order their cheesecake online and have it shipped to you. Who knew?

Check out their amazing selection here, place your order and camp out near your mailbox. It's that simple!
Spring the cheesecake link!

I'm thinking I'll order one for vday and split it with my other single pals before we (hopefully) go out to a fun party. There's nothing like cheesecake to warm the hearts of a bunch of single girls.

First kiss, take 2.

Jan 22, 2009

The post you're about to read is probably one of the most personal accounts I've shared with you. I've debated whether or not to post it for the better part of three weeks and finally decided to do it.

I'm participating in a blog carnival over at 20 Something Bloggers. The topic: first kisses. Now, instead of writing about my actual first kiss (which either took place at age 13 or age 16- it's debatable), I thought I'd share something I wrote a little while back.

It's raw and emotional and well,  real. I wrote it the day after the kiss and therefore was still feeling its afterglow. (Note: I've made a few edits since then, but otherwise, it's the real deal, folks.) Because of that, I feel it's much more powerful than anything I could scribble out right now about a kiss at an 8th grade dance or  a kiss with a close friend. (Although if you want to hear those stories, they're pretty classic and of course awkwardly hysterical- go figure.)

But anyway, here it is. Enjoy...

Pink Thursday: birthday edition

A few weeks ago, I was browsing the Target circulars when I found something amazing: a hot pink desk chair. I excitedly showed it to my mom, and then promptly forgot about it. The next day, I came home to find my mom in the kitchen, where she excitedly told me she had a surprise for me.

You guessed it- she'd bought me the hot pink chair! Not only was it beautiful, but also functional. In the PPC  (pre pink chair) era, I was forced to steal chairs from the dining room if I wanted to sit at my desk. Of course, when we had guests over, the chair I'd stolen would mysteriously migrate back to the dining room, and I'd be left with nothing.

Until now. This is the dawn of a new era- I call it, the PINK AGE!

Happy Pink Thursday everyone, and thank you for the birthday wishes!

I know, my room is very pink. I like to think of it as the inside of a giant pink cupcake!

Pink drinks and birthdays

Jan 21, 2009

Hello everyone! Although yesterday was a momentous day for our country, today was a pretty important day for, well, for me: my 21st birthday!

At midnight, I was about to go to bed when I was bombarded by phone calls and text messages from my friends. The fact that I was going to bed instead of going out partying made me feel old.

Tonight, I got dinner with some of my closest BU friends at Pizzeria Uno. Although they are all underage, they INSISTED that I order a drink. I felt weird being the only one drinking, but knew I had to partake because you know, you only turn 21 once...and it would be my first (legal) drink in the states.

When the waitress came back to our table I said- "Today is my 21st birthday and I'm going to order a drink. I know I don't look like I'm 21, so let me get my ID."

It was that simple. And then I had a scrumptious pomegranate margarita, on the rocks with salt, of course!

So hooray for birthdays and friends and pink alcoholic beverages.

XO

PS- I'll write a more coherent post tomorrow, but right now I'm a bit sleepy from my CRAZY night (haha just kidding).

Aretha Franklin, you got it goin' on!

Jan 20, 2009

I have to say, as much as I disliked Michelle Obama's ensemble, I was completely blown away by the style of another African American fashionista: Aretha Franklin. I mean, did you see her hat with the gigantic bow?

It kind of reminded me of past birthday and Hanukkah parties. My sisters and I would make hats out of the remains of present wrapping: ribbons, bows, tissue paper, etc. Our hats were always extravagant and exaggerated, over-the-top and amazing...kind of like Aretha's.

I was just trying to describe the diva-licious hat to Jenni, who only managed to catch Obama's speech, which is pretty good considering she's not even American. I scoured the Internet (ok fine, I typed "Aretha Franklin Inauguration" into Google) and got nothing. I was devestated...until I looked on CollegeCandy, which had a link from the LA Times with a photo!

Check her out:

Oh, and considering my birthday is tomorrow, I'm expecting millions of tissue paper wrapped presents, so perhaps Megan and I will perform the old hat making traddition and replicate Ms. Franklin's bow-dacious beauty.
